Joseph B. Bivin was born March 20, 1842 in Prince George county, Maryland. He came to Iowa with his parents when but 5 years of age. He married Miss Mary Huff of Davis county on Oct. 18, 1866. To this union three sons were born.
On August 21, 1862, he enlisted in Co. E, 36th regiment of Iowa Infantry and served till Aug. 24, 1865, when he was mustered out at Davenport. He was in the following battles: Fort Pemberton, Helena, Little Rock, Elkins Ford, Prairie D'Ann, Camden, Mack's Mills, Jenkins' Ferry. He was captured and taken prisoner at Prairie D'Ann and taken to Camp Ford at Tyler, Texas, where he was held a prisoner for 10 months.
About 20 years ago he joined the G.A.R. And was buried with the honors of the same. Mr. Bivin departed this life on Oct. 4, 1916, leaving to mourn his departure, a faithful wife and three sons, James T. Bivin of Randall, Wash.; Austin T. of Keokuk, Iowa and William L. of Chehalis, Wash. Two sisters: Sarah Fleming of Houston, Texas and Mary Proctor of Ash Grove, Iowa. Two granddaughters: Flossie and Ruth Bivin of Keokuk, Iowa.
The funeral was held in the Methodist church of this city Saturday morning, Oct. 7th at 10 o'clock, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. M. Cable, and the remains were laid to rest in the Rock City cemetery.
