Mary Frances Cox was born in Marshall county, Illinois, February 1, 1865 and lived in Illinois until 18 years of age, when she moved to Madison county, Iowa, where she has since made her home with the exception of a few years when she resided in the northern part of Clarke county.

In 1891 she was united in marriage with E. J. Spurgin and to this union were born five children, three sons who died in infancy and two daughters, Edith Esther and Agnes Lavere. In 1912 they took into their home Curtis Dowler, whom she has since loved as a son. She has been a devoted wife and a kind and loving mother.

She was united with the Methodist Protestant church at Union and was a member there until after moving to Truro where she united with the Truro Christian church.

On October 31, 1921 she was stricken with apoplexy and has since been an invalid. She has been a patient uncomplaining sufferer and always had a smile for everyone. Her life has been an example of great Christian faith and her faith and love in the Saviour have sustained her and given her the strength to believe, “His Will, not mine, be done.”

She departed this life September 13, 1927 at the age of 62 years, 7 months and 13 days. She leaves to mourn her loss a kind and loving husband, two daughters, Mrs. Edith Neidt and Miss Agnes, a foster son, Curtis Dowler, a son-in-law, Frank Neidt and four grandchildren, Cleona, Laverne, Joe and Mary Evelyn, two sisters, Mrs. Mattie Burd of Limmens, Mo., Mrs. Roager of Norcaster, Kan., two brothers, Joe Cox of Atwood, Kan., and John Cox of Carbel, Calif., ten nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.

Note: Burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
