East Peru Physician Dies After Illness of Two Hours

Dr. J. W. Carver of East Peru, died about midnight Monday, following an illness of less than two hours.

Monday evening he made a professional visit near Truro, and afterward attended a meeting of the town council. Before the adjournment of the council meeting, he intimated that he felt that one of his attacks might be coming on. Soon after retiring, he called the telephone operator, and when friends reached his bedside, they found him to be suffering intensely. Dr. Griffith was called and a hypodermic administered, but he died within a short time.

For the past year or two he had been subject to severe attacks of some kind, from which he suffered much, but soon rallied. Dr. Carver was a comparatively young man, about forty years of age. He enjoyed a large practice, was devoted to the work of relieving suffering humanity and with his kind hearted, generous manner, won a warm place in the hearts of the people of that vicinity. We know of no one who might be sorely missed from the town of East Peru. Hundreds of people will mourn his death.

Former Clarke County Man is Dead.

Dr. J. W. Carver of East Peru, died after midnight August 7, following an illness of less than two hours. Dr. Carver is well known in Clarke county, being a former Murray boy and later a physician in Hopeville. The night he died he made a professional visit near Truro, and afterwards attended a meeting of the town council. Before the adjournment of the council, he intimated that he felt ill.

Dr. Carver is a man about forty years old. He enjoyed a large practise. For the past few years he has been subject to attacks of sickness from which he suffered much.

John Wesley Carver was born near East Peru, Madison county, Iowa, on Sept. 12, 1879, and died in East Peru Aug. 8, 1916, at the age of 36 years, 10 months and 26 days. His early life was spent on a farm east of Peru. When about 18 years of age he graduated from the Murray high school, after which he entered Simpson college at Indianola, and from there he entered on his medical course at Keokuk Medical college, graduating in the year 1906 with the degree M.D. He practiced medicine at Hopeville, Iowa, for about three years, coming to East Peru in the fall of 1909, where he has ever since maintained a very successful practice of medicine.

He was married to Miss Clara Belle Evans, Jan. 1, 1913, who departed this life Feb. 26, 1913. Later, he was united in marriage to Miss Gladys Martin, June 9, 1915, who departed this life April 26, 1916. To this happy union a son, Martin Luther was born. The death angel called Baby Martin to be with Mamma on the 19th day of May at the age of 23 days.

While yet a student in the Murray high school, he was converted and united with the M.E. church at that place, where, until the year 1909, when he transferred his membership to the M.E. church at East Peru, where he was a faithful member of the same. He was a man highly respected and loved by the entire community, was a great favorite of his patients, a very skillful physician, and holding a high place in the medical world and will be a great loss to the community. He leaves to mourn the loss of him, a father, four brothers, one sister and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held from the M.E. church on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 10th by Rev. C. K. Corkill to the largest concourse of friends ever assembled in Peru. He was then laid to rest by the side of his late wife at Ebeneezer cemetery.

DEATH OF DR. J. W. CARVER

Peru and vicinity was stunned almost beyond speech, or thought, Tuesday morning when it was learned that Dr. Carver had died suddenly at 12 o’clock Monday night. The doctor apparently in his usual health Monday, and Monday evening attended Council meeting and at about 10 o’clock telephoned for John Morgan to come at once as he was sick at his office. John went, and in turn called Clyde Wilkinson and they called Dr. Griffith of Peru and Dr. Ayers of Lorimor, but to no avail and death came at 12, midnight.

Dr. Carver needs no eulogy from any one. He was born near Ebeneezer in 1879, and was raised to manhood by God fearing parents, and he devoted his life to the healing of the sick. His presence in the sick room, with his pleasant smile, had a soothing effect on his patients. He will be missed and mourned by hundreds. He has had more than his share of trouble and now is at rest.

His brother, Dr. Will Carver, of Fort Dodge, was notified of his death Monday night and came at once. He called on Dr. Thompson to hold a postmortem and in company with Drs. Davenport and Embree of Winterset conducted it. They found nothing to show but that he died from natural causes. Several months ago he met with a severe automobile accident and was badly broken up. He never recovered from it and was taken to the hospital two or three time since in consequence. His death we presume comes from the same cause.

The funeral was held Thursday from the M. E. church, of which he was a member, conducted by Rev. C. K. Corkill of Melcher, assisted by Rev. Sam Howe of Truro, and Rev. Jones of Peru. There was a large concourse of people present, the large auditorium, the League room and Sunday School class room were filled to overflowing, and many were the real tears of sorrow shed by men, women and children. The interment was at Ebeneezer, within sight of the old home where he was born, where his body was laid to rest beside his beloved wife and child. Truly, is Dr. Carver gone, but never will he be forgotten.
