Dexter, IowaArthur Gabbert Gowin, son of William Stokely and Sarah Elizabeth Gabbert Gowin, was born December 19, 1894, about two miles east of Dexter, Iowa. Here he grew up, attending the local school, and went to college in Iowa City. He then farmed with his brother George until he went into the Service, enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served a year as Quartermaster 1st Class in the Aviation department.
He was united in marriage to Marie Oberman Ruth July 22, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., where they lived three years; they lived in Bettendorf, Ia. For 25 years, then in Winterset, Ia., 13 years before moving to Dexter to make their home 4 years ago.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the American Legion, and the United Presbyterian Church. He had worked for the government as a railway postal clerk for about 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; two sisters and five brothers. He is survived by one sister, Bertha Billings, a brother, Dean Gowin, both of Madison Manor, Winterset.
Mr. Gowin passed away April 26, 1971 at the Rowley Masonic Home in Perry, Ia. Last rites were held at the Dexter United Presbyterian Church, with interment in the McDonald Cemetery west of Winterset.
Casket bearers were Lyman, Edwin and Dick Bales; Stephen, Howard and Herbert Gowin.

Arthur Gowin Dies Suddenly
Arthur Gowin of Dexter, a former Winterset resident, died suddenly this Monday, April 26, at the Masonic home in Perry. He was 76 years of age.
Mr. Gowin had been a resident of the Masonic home since last April. The death of his wife occurred two months ago.
Funeral services will be held from the Dexter Presbyterian church this Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. John Latta officiating. Burial will be in McDonald cemetery northwest of Winterset.
