Page 1J. L. Brown, a pioneer resident of Madison county, and Winterset, died Tuesday, about one o’clock at his home here. Mr. Brown has been in poor health for the past six weeks and pneumonia caused his death. He was eighty-one years of age.
The deceased was born in Washington county, Indiana, May 10th, 1845 and came to Madison county with his parents in 1854. They located in the Fairview neighborhood and lived there for many years.
Sixteen years ago, he and Mrs. Brown, who was Miss Martha Mills previous to her marriage, came to Winterset, to make their home. Since 1854, Mr. Brown had made this county his home, with the exception of two years spent in Texas, and several years in Wyoming and Arkansas.
Funeral services are being conducted at Tidrick’s Funeral home, at two o’clock this afternoon, by Rev. D. J. Shenton, and burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, and nine children: A. W. Wheaton of De Soto, California; Walter Brown in Patterson; Frank of Ruthven; Otis of Beaver, Wyoming; Allison of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Allie Fowler of Moline, Illinois; Mrs. Della Fields of Winterset; Bradley of Earlham, and Earl of Burnes, Oregon.

Page 6John L. Brown was born May 10th, 1845, in Washington county, Indiana, and died at his home in Winterset on April 5th, 1927, aged 81 years, 10 months and 26 days.
At nine years of age, he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lindsley Brown to Muscatine, Iowa, living there a short while and then moving to Madison county. They settled on a farm near Fairview church and his mother became one of its charter members. During most of his life he resided in Iowa except for a few years spent in Wyoming and Arkansas.
In early life he converted and united with the Methodist church at Worthington and followed his Master’s example through life.
He was united in marriage to Martha E. Mills in 1870. To this union were born nine children, all living except Eugene, who passed away in 1909. Those living are Walter, near Patterson; Frank of Ruthven; Otis of Beaver, Wyoming; Allison of Portland, Oregon; Earl of Burns, Oregon, Bradley of Earlham; Mrs. Allie Fowler of Moline, Illinois and Mrs. Delia Fields of Winterset; also one step-son, A. W. Wheaton of DeSoto, California. There are twenty-five grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren. He was an exemplary father to his children and an affectionate husband to his wife he so tenderly cared for in their twilight days together. He leaves besides his wife and children many other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at the Tidrick Funeral Home Thursday afternoon, April 7th, at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

B. B. Brown and family were called to Winterset today to attend the funeral of his father Mr. J. L. Brown who passed away Tuesday in his 81st year after a lingering illness with heart trouble and finally pneumonia. Others attending the funeral at the Tidrick funeral home were the C. W. Hays family, David Gabbert, a son F. M. Brown, of Ruthven, a daughter Mrs. Allie Fowler of Moline, Ill. and a nephew Will Brown, who is a tenant of the J. R. Thomson farm west of Des Moines.
Mr. Brown is best remembered as the landlord of the old frame hotel on the site of the power house over twenty years ago. After a two-year tenure he moved with his family to the present D. R. Jones residence, then to the five-acre tract east of town, and finally to Wyoming before returning to Winterset to spend his declining years. He is survived by his wife, the three children mentioned and three sons in Wyoming and Oregon who were unable to attend the funeral. The funeral service was conducted today by Rev. Shannon, and interment was at Winterset.
