Page 5Death of Mrs. James Johnson
Mrs. James Johnson, who has been ill for the past five weeks, died Sunday evening about 7:30 o’clock at her home on South Fourth Avenue. She was 76 years of age, and has had heart trouble, and complications.
Mrs. Johnson came here fifty-three years ago. She and her husband, George Kirby, located in Winterset and she has lived in this town since then, with the exception of one year when she resided in the country. Her husband died in 1897 and about thirteen years ago she was married to Mr. Johnson.
She is survived by Mr. Johnson and three children: one daughter, Mrs. Fred Jacobs of Eagle Rock, California, and two sons, Herman Kirby, and J. E. Kirby, of Winterset. Three children have died: Hannah in infancy; Walter, eight years ago; and Will, a year ago.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. Clare McCallon at Tidrick’s funeral home, Tuesday afternoon, at 2:30 o’clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Chastina Dail Johnson was born in Linn county, Missouri, in 1851 and was married to George W. Kirby in 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Kirby resided in Linn county until 1874 when they moved in a covered wagon to Winterset, Iowa. This city has been their home continuously until her death which occurred January 16, 1927.
To this union were born six children, Anna E., who died in infancy; Eva K. Jacobs, of Los Angeles, California; T. E. and J. H. Kirby, of Winterset; W. J. Kirby of Spokane, Washington; and George Walter Kirby of Portland, Oregon, both deceased.
Mr. Kirby’s death occurred in 1896 and in 1912 Mrs. Kirby was married to James Johnson.
She was a true and patient wife, and a loving mother, devoted to her home and children. She was converted and joined the Church of Christ when fourteen years of age. Until about four years ago she had enjoyed the best of health.
She leaves to mourn her a husband, three children, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many friends.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. F. Clare McCallon, pastor of the Church of Christ, Tuesday afternoon, January 18, from Tidrick’s funeral home. Interment was in Rock City cemetery by the side of G. W. Kirby.
