Winterset Madisonian – December 30, 1926
Pg 3Amanda Jane Cook, who was born in the state of Illinois, February 4th, 1849, to Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Smith, passed away at her home in this county December 24th, 1926, aged 77 years, 10 months and 20 days. When a small child she came with her parents to Iowa, locating in Marion county. A few years later the mother was called away and Manda was among the oldest of nine children left motherless and here she learned a lesson of patience and unselfishness, never to be forgotten as she cared for the helpless little ones. When she was grown to womanhood, she was married to Thomas Cook and later they moved on a farm near Kasson, where they spent the remaining years.
To this union were born six children. In 1899 the father passed away and a few months later little Everett. A son, Marion, was taken sick with a lingering illness that proved fatal in 1901 and a daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Ross, died in 1920. On Christmas eve, death again entered the home, taking the mother after a few days’ illness. The end came unexpectedly due to heart failure. The remaining children are: Mrs. Nellie Denton, Lorimor; Mrs. Francis Jeffs, Barney; and Charles, the oldest child, at home. Two grandchildren, Glen and Kenneth Ross, have made their home with Charles and his mother for a number of years. Much sympathy is extended to these motherless boys and the surviving ones, including a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two brothers, Andrew and John Smith of Lorimor; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Berry of Carroll, Missouri, and Mrs. Martha Chenoweth of Lorimor. Also a number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends mourn the loss of one who seemed to near and dear. Having lived in the home from which she was called so suddenly, for fifty years, she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Briden at the Methodist church at Lorimor Sunday, at 1:30 o’clock. Burial was made at the Clark cemetery.
