Page 9Minerva Jane Sulgrove was born November 2nd, 1841, at Indianapolis, Indiana, and passed away at St. Charles, November 26th, 1926, at the age of 85 years and 24 days.
She came with her parents to Iowa by ox team in 1852 and settled near Winterset, and this county has been her home from that time until the time of her death.
She grew to womanhood on a farm and has always lived on a farm. At the age of 16 years, in 1857, she was united to George W. Wolverton, also of Madison county. To this union were born seven children, three boys and four girls. The oldest daughter passed away at the age of 22 in the year 1882. The husband and father also passed away July 29th, 1888. After the death of the father, the mother and two small children made their home with her son, Emanuel, and cared for his infant son, Earl.
The three boys preceded her in death: Emanuel, August 16th, 1922; Alva, January 7th, 1925, and James, October 7th, 1925. The living children are Mrs. C. A. Stanley of Earlham, Mrs. C. R. Harrison of Des Moines, and Mrs. Charles Ragan of St. Charles. She has lived in the latter’s home for the past eleven years.
In her young womanhood she united with the Christian church at North River, and later her membership was transferred to Early Chapel and she has remained faithful to the end.
She has been a good wife and mother, having had a deep interest in her community and the people about her. She was always ready and glad to help others in every time of need. Everything was done for this beloved mother that medical skill and loving hands could do.
There are left to mourn her departure, three daughters and their husbands; three widowed daughters-in-law, 24 grandchildren, 16 (26) great grandchildren, besides a large number of nephews and nieces, and a host of friends.
