Winterset Madisonian – June 10, 1926
Pg 3

Martha Beatrice, daughter of Geo. D. and Matilda Ratliff, was born in Winterset, March 12th, 1871. Her girlhood was spent in Winterset where she graduated from the high school in the class of 1890.

She was married to John C. Mardis the same year and since then has lived in Des Moines, except for a few years they were in Omaha.

To this union four children were born. Two died in infancy and the others are Homer D. of Des Moines and Mary Stonedale of Minneapolis.

Mr. Mardis passed away in 1922 and since then she and Homer have made their home together in Des Moines.

She was for many years a regular attendant at St. Paul’s Episcopal church in Des Moines. The greatest thing in her life has been her love of home and children and next has been her capacity for friendship. She has been in failing health for many years but in spite of bodily weakness, she retained her marvelous sweetness and love for others which ever made her life so rich in friendships.

She passed away in Des Moines on June 3rd, 1926, aged 55 years, 2 months and 22 days. She leaves, besides her children, two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Leo Weston of Whittier, California, and Mrs. Louise Herron of Kimberly, Idaho; three brothers, Fred of Los Angeles, Ralph of Omaha, and Will of Cedar Rapids; and a number of other relatives, and many friends.

Rev. LeRoy C. Cooley conducted the funeral services from Tidrick’s Funeral Home on Saturday afternoon and interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.
