PHOEBE ELIZA WHITWORTH

Phoebe Eliza Ballard was born on November 18, 1858, in Henry county, Illinois, and died at her home near Macksburg, June 20, 1915, age 56 years, 7 months, 2 days. She was the eldest of twelve children, of whom only two are now living. At the age of ten years, she moved with her parents, Samuel and Martha Ballard, to Grand River township, Madison County, in 1868. She was married September 12, 1878 to Morley Whitworth and moved to the farm where she has since resided until her death. To this union was born one son, Lyle M.

She was converted at the age of twelve and joined the Methodist church at Macksburg, in which she was an active member, keeping up with her church work and seldom missing any services unless compelled to do so by illness. Especially did she freely and gladly give her interest and time to her Sunday school work, being teacher of the primary class many years; always working for the advancement of her classes and striving for the high ideal of living, as expressed by her Master's life.

She came into the spirit of heart-purity August 8, 1902. She was secretary of the Madison County Holiness Association since 1903. A most devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor and a friend to whom none ever looked in vain for help whenever needed.

She is survived by a most devoted husband, a son, Lyle, and his wife; an aged mother, two brothers, Ransom and Glen Ballard and a host of friends. Her motto was this: “I am, O Lord, wholly and forever Thine,” The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, June 22d at two o'clock and were largely attended. The following ministers officiated: Rev. Whitney of Macksburg, her pastor; Rev. Roy Spooner of Lorimor, formerly her pastor; and Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt of Winterset, her former presiding elder, who by request of Mrs. Whitworth, preached the sermon from the text Psa, 23:4. All the details of the funeral plans were executed as the deceased requested. Burial was in the Macksburg cemetery.
