Mrs. Mary McCleeary Killed When Auto Turns Over on Grade
Mrs. Mary McCleeary, aged mother of A. B. and W. A. McCleeary, was killed last Friday evening when the car in which she was riding, overturned on the grade north of the Tilton residence three miles north of Winterset.
The aged mother, with her son, A. B. McCleeary and granddaughter, Maude, were returning to their home in Jefferson township. A building which was being moved, stood on the grade between the Tilton farm and the Diller corner. Miss McCleeary, who was at the wheel, was driving slowly and turned out to pass the building. The right hind wheels sank in the soft grade and the combined efforts of the daughter and father were exerted to hold the car on the grade, but it went over the grade in spite of their efforts.
Mrs. McCleeary was rushed to the Winterset hospital, where she died within a short time from a fractured skull and other injuries.
Mrs. McCleeary, who was past 91 was the wife of Wm. McCleeary, one of the early settlers in Jefferson township, and the last representative of the elder McCleearys, who came to this county in an early day.
She is survived by four children: A. B. and Wm. A. McCleeary of this county; Mrs. Mary Cooper of Lamar, Colo., and Mrs. Martin Grimes of Derby, Iowa.
