Archibald McConnelee, son of William and Margaret McConnelee, was born Sept. 26, 1843 in Ashland county, Ohio. In 1854, the family drove from there to Madison county. He volunteered at the beginning of the civil war, when he was 17 years old and served until the close with Co I 4th Iowa Cavalry.

He was married to Mary Rotherham, March 12, 1885. To them were born five sons and five daughters: William of Flint, Mich.; James H. of Omaha, Nebr.; Arthur L., of Atlantic; Irvin O., killed in France; George W., of Griswold; Mrs. R. H. Kuhl, of Atlantic; Mrs. R. D. Chamberlain, Sheridan, Wyo.; Mrs. Everett Wray, Des Moines; Mrs. Earl Reed, Ranchester, Wyo.; Miss Ethel of Atlantic. He lived on a farm 7 ½ miles southeast of Winterset until 1908, and in 1912 went to the national military home at Leavenworth, Kans., leaving there in 1922 to make his home in Des Moines with his daughter, Mrs. Everett Wray. He had been visiting his daughters in Wyoming and was taken seriously ill on the train, Sunday, Aug. 16th and passed away at 12:15 p.m. Aug. 19th at the Swedish Mission hospital in Omaha. He was a member of the G.A.R. at Winterset.

Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the U. P. church, conducted by Rev. W. Z. Allen with burial in the Winterset cemetery. Twelve G.A.R. comrades attended.
