Wilber Dowler was called by death at Peru, about eight o’clock Friday morning. He was stricken with apoplexy on the Monday evening preceding his death. Mr. Dowler, who was seventy years old, came to Madison county with his parents when quite small. He was married to Betty Hart in 1876, who with one son preceded him in death.

He leaves in tender memory, one son, Benjamin of Peru, seven grandchildren, one great grandson, and four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. J. W. Eldridge of Winterset, Mrs. Jane Imes of Kansas City, Kans., Mrs. Fletcher Porter and Mrs. Will Porter of Truro, Stewart Dowler of Peru and John and H. R. Dowler of Casper, Wyo. He was a member of the Methodist church, daily living the life of a true Christian. He was also affiliated with the Masonic lodge, Des Moines Consistory Scottish Rite Masons, thirty-second degree, the Shrine and the I.O.O.F.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Peru conducted by an old friend, S. C. Howe of Truro. The Masons assisted with the service.

Wilbur, son of Joseph and Martha Roberts Dowler, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania April 17, 1855. In the year 1865, he with his parents, removed to Madison county, Iowa, where he continued to reside until his death on June 26, 1925, at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 9 days.

In March, 1876 he was united in marriage with Betty Hurt, who preceded him in death in February, 1905. To this union were born two sons, Woodie and Benjamin, the former passing away in January, 1910.

Several years ago, he was converted and united with the M.E. church at Peru. He was a consistent member of Hazel lodge No. 573, A.F. & A.M., a member of Des Moines Consistory Scottish Rite Masons, thirty-second degree, and a member of the Shrine, also Maple Leaf lodge No. 577 Odd Fellows.

He was a loving, self-sacrificing father, brother, uncle and friend—never sparing of his energy nor means in time of need. His lasting devotion to his fatherless grandchildren is especially worthy of note.

He is survived by one son, three brothers, four sisters, seven grandchildren and one great grandson, all of whom, with the exception of one brother, were present to minister to his needs during his final, brief illness.
