LOSES LIFE UNDER WHEELS OF WAGON

Three Year Old Son of Chester Stanley Falls From Loaded Wagon

The three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Stanley of Jefferson township, met a tragic death on Saturday evening, when he fell from a wagon. The wheels passed over the body, breaking his back and otherwise injuring him.

The little fellow, who was an only child of the family was riding on a loaded wagon and the wagon slipped into a rut and the team started suddenly, throwing both occupants from the wagon. The father tried to catch the boy, but failed in the attempt.

He was taken to a nearby neighbor’s and doctors called, but the little life was beyond recall.

This is one of the saddest of accidents, and calls forth the deepest sympathy from the entire community.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Christian church in Earlham, and burial made at that place.

In the sweet springtime, three years ago, a lad of promise came to the new home made by the uniting of the lives of Chester W. Stanley and Bertha Aldrich, living between Earlham and Winterset. Only those who have daily watched the unfolding of such sweet, winsome lives can understand the love, the hopes, that clustered around it, and how strong the cord of love and devotion grew. The biography reads, Jack Junior Stanley, only child, son of Chester W. and Bertha Stanley, was born in Madison county, Iowa, May 14, 1922 and died June 13, 1925, aged 3 years and 29 days. How brief! But we live in deeds, not years, and eternity only can reveal the influence of these few years.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Earlham on Monday, June 15th, conducted by Rev. Pringle.

Jack Junior Stanley, three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Stanley living between Earlham and Winterset was so badly injured when the wheels of a heavily laden wagon passed over his body at about 1:00 o’clock Saturday afternoon that death came at five o’clock without the child having regained consciousness.

The father, Chester Stanley, was returning home with a load of feed. The little boy ran out to meet him, and being helped into a seat beside his father, rode most of the distance to the house. A new grade had just been established along the road in front of the Stanley home, and the culvert bridging the drive into the farmyard had been replaced by a narrower one, leaving a deep ditch on either side. As the wagon swung sharply to make this abrupt turn, one of the wheels dropped into the ditch and the child was thrown from the seat. The father immediately realized the situation and almost instantaneously dropped to the ground beside the child. His efforts to save little Junior were too late however, and before he could act the wheel of the wagon and its contents of 4,000 pounds of feed passed over the child, breaking its back and causing other injuries. The child may have sustained fatal injuries in the fall. He did not move again after striking the ground.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Church of Christ in Earlham, with M. B. Pringle officiating. Interment was in Earlham Cemetery. The following obituary was dedicated to the young life which all too soon was called to its Maker:

In the sweet springtime three years ago, a bud of promise came to the new home made by the uniting of the lives of Chester W. Stanley and Bertha Aldrich, living between Earlham and Winterset.

Only those who have daily watched the unfolding of such sweet, winsome live, can understand the love, the woes, that clustered around it, and how strong the cord of love and devotion grew.
