Page 1Little Child Burned In Stable
A most distressing occurrence was the burning of the little four years old boy of Mrs. Fred Jeffs, of Monroe township on last Friday.
The family live just east of the old store building at Kasson. On the day mentioned, the little boy went into an old stable near the house and it is supposed that in some way he started a fire with matches. Members of the family discovered the fire and alarmed the neighbors, but the boy was not missed until the sides of the stable collapsed and revealed his charred body within the building.
In the excitement that followed, someone sent a telephone message to Winterset requesting a coroner's inquest. A jury was empaneled with Justice J. H. Beamer, of Macksburg, acting as coroner. The inquest, however, was not necessary as there was no evidence tending to show that the death was other than accidental.
The affair would be heart rending under any circumstances is more distressing from the fact that the mother is a widow and the mother of a large family of children. They were preparing to move to Barney when the accident occurred.
