Jack Monaghan Killed Under Car. Brake refused to Work on Steep Hill

Jack Monaghan, of Crawford township was instantly killed Tuesday evening when his auto brake refused to work on the Frank McCleary hill nine miles northeast of Winterset. Mrs. Monaghan escaped by jumping from the car.

Mr. and Mrs. Monaghan were returning from the wedding of Mr. Monaghan's brother in Lee township. In descending the steep hill between the McCleary and Wheeler homes, the brakes refused to work. Mrs. Monaghan jumped from the car and escaped with slight injuries. It is believed that Mr. Monaghan turned the car into the ditch, hoping to avert a worse accident as the road at the foot of the hill winds through the timber and it would be impossible to guide the car. Mrs. Monaghan ran to the McCleary residences and Frank McCleary and H. P. Wheeler reached the scene of the accident before the wheels of the car had stopped running. Monaghan was pinned underneath. His neck was broken and his breast crushed in by the weight of the car.

The unfortunate man was a son of the late Edward Monaghan and lived on the old homestead in section six, Crawford township. He leaves a wife and five children, besides several brothers and one sister.
