Winterset Madisonian – November 13, 1924
Pg 7

Harriet Wight, daughter of Dexter Howard, was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, April 16, 1835. She came with her parents to Madison county when still a girl, and later was married to James Wight. To this union seven children were born. There were five boys, all of whom died at a very early age, and one daughter, Mrs. Ida Friberg, died in 1892. The other daughter, Mrs. Cora E. Duff of Canton, S. D. survives her. Mr. Wight died in 1876, when the children were very small. She became the victim of a serious mental trouble before the death of her husband and has been unable to care for herself for many years.

As a girl, Mrs. Wight was of an unusually lovable, cheery nature and during her long years of affliction, her cheerfulness and friendliness remained with her, helping to brighten the lives of those about her. There is no record of her having been a member of a church, but she dearly loved the old gospel hymns and seemed to ever have a simple, childlike faith in her Savior.

She passed away at Winterset, Nov. 3, 1924, aged 89 years, 5 months and 16 days, leaving besides her daughter, seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, and holding the love and respect of all those who knew her best.

Funeral services were held at the Tidrick funeral home, Nov. 5th, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. Interment was made in the Wight cemetery.

Coordinator's note: There is a mistake in the second obituary. Harriet is the sister of Dexter Howard, not his daughter.
