Page 2William M. Shearer was born in Poweshiek county, Iowa, Jan. 20, 1864 and died in Winterset, Oct. 19, 1924. He came with his parents to Winterset in 1874, where he lived until his death. Owing to a physical infirmity, he had a hard road to travel all the way. Notwithstanding the obstacles meeting him at every turn in life, he did not falter, but pressed forward, striving with earnestness and perseverance to do his part. He was hopeful and cheerful to the end of his journey.
Some 50 years ago, a man our older citizens knew so well, Jacob Morgan by name, an uncle of his, came to Winterset to take charge of the Winterset News, and it was probably owing to this fact that the Shearers located here. Mr. Morgan, having disposed of his newspaper business to Col. Palmer, whom we all knew so well, went to Washington, D. C. and took a place in the government printing office, dying about ten years ago. The Shearers remained in Winterset, where the father died in 1898 and the mother, Abigail Shearer, died in 1918 at Portland, Ore., while visiting her children there.
Of the ten children born to this family, eight remain as follows: Maude of California, Frank of Seattle; Fred, Stella and Jane of Portland, Ore.; Bert of Stuart, Nebr.; Marion of Des Moines and Mrs. Laura Wright of Winterset, who patiently and lovingly administered to her brother during his last illness.
Funeral services were held at the house Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton, assisted by E. R. Zeller.
