Death removed from our midst on last Tuesday a woman of unusual grace and Christian character, Mrs. Margaret Laidley Lewis. Mrs. Lewis had been failing in health for sometime and had been bedfast for a number of weeks before her death, so the end was not unexpected.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton of the Methodist church, and burial here in Winterset. More complete data as to the life of Mrs. Lewis is published elsewhere in this paper.

Sarah Margaret Laidley was born May 12, 1850, in the family home in Carmichaels, Pa., the thirteenth and youngest child of Dr. Thomas Hamilton Laidley and Sarah Barclay Laidley. Her parents and her brothers and sisters were active members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and early in her childhood, Margaret became a member of that church, and was an active and efficient member until her first marriage, when she transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church in Winterset, of which organization she was an active member up to her final illness and death.

As she grew up, she was a second mother to the numerous nephews and nieces, helping care for them in their childhood ailments and advising them in their childish sorrows and difficulties. She took the child of her sister Mary, who died at his birth, and cared for him from the age of five weeks, to the years of manhood. As a child, she was plump and jolly, and it was often said, “Maggie Laidley is coming, I can hear her laugh.”

She was married Sept. 28, 1891 to Dr. W. L. Leonard. He was several years her senior, and an invalid, and she cared tenderly for him until his death, Dec. 19, 1893. She was again married, Feb. 19, 1896 to W. H. Lewis, who survives her and for more than twenty-eight years, her loyal assistance was the controlling element in such success as he achieved. She was a loyal wife, a helpful comrade and a faithful and tender friend.

The funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 27th, at 2:30 at the Presbyterian church. The services were conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton, pastor of the M.E. church.
