Death of Mrs. Maria Brooker

Mrs. Maria Killam-Brooker died in Van Meter on March 20th. She was a prominent church worker in the Fairview neighborhood during her residence there. Her husband, the late Goodliff Brooker, also was devoted to the interests of Sunday schools in Madison county.

Mrs. Brooker was a pioneer in this county, and since her husband’s death, she has lived by turns with her three daughters. She was very active throughout her long life and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held March 23rd at Van Meter, with burial in Earlham.

Maria Killam Brooker was born February 23, 1841, in Galesburg, Illinois. She departed this life, March 20, 1924, aged 83 years, 27 days at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Fisher, of Van Meter, Iowa, where she had been spending the winter. At an early age her parents moved to Clayton county, Ia., where she received her education and later taught.

She was united in marriage to Goodliff Brooker September 25, 1852. To this union were born three children, G. A. Brooker, of Earlham, Iowa, who died 1906; Mrs. Lizzie Fisher of Van Meter, Iowa and Mrs. Jennie Slocum of Pharr, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Brooker moved to Madison county, Iowa in an early day and endured the hardships of pioneer life.

Her companion was president of the Madison county Sunday school work for over 25 years. It was only by her untiring love and devotion for this great work that he was able to carry his work successfully. For 25 years she was superintendent of the primary department of the Fairview Sunday school near DeSoto. To these her consecrated life has been a benediction as they grew to manhood and womanhood.

Mrs. Brooker leaves to mourn her departure, two daughters, four brothers, six grandchildren, and a multitude of friends. For the last six years she has made her home with her two daughters, spending her summers with Mrs. Fisher of Van Meter and her winters with Mrs. Jennie Slocum of Pharr, Texas, where she made many devoted friends.

At an early age Mrs. Brooker joined the Congregational church, and at the time of her marriage transferred to the Methodist church. At her death she was a member of the Methodist church of Pharr, Texas. We look back over her years of a ----------------of usefulness and is surely there is a reward for her having finished the life’s span. (One unreadable sentence here) Hers was a life cast in years that went to make her womanhood and motherhood of the highest possible type. Pages in her life history would make good lessons for we manhood of this or any other age. The world is better for her having lived in it, and it would be still better if there were more mothers like her. How proud we are of her. She certainly received answers, and help from her pleadings and her prayers. No person can read her life’s story and doubt the efficiency in prayer. Mrs. Brooker leaves a life of 83 pages filled with highest ideals of motherhood, devotion, kindness, sympathy and love, Christian faith and hope.
