Page 1Sam J. Callison, an old time resident of this county, died at his home on West Filmore street, last Saturday, Dec. 8th, at the age of 76 years. He was a respected and well known citizen of this county, coming to Monroe township when he was 20 years old.
The following year, 1868, he was married to Julia B. Robinson, who died in 1905. The following year he was married to Mrs. Ella Dunbar, who now survives him.
About 16 years ago, Mr. Callison moved to Winterset, where he has since resided. His health began to fail last fall and five weeks ago he became critically ill with kidney trouble. He never recovered from this sickness, and his condition gradually became worse.
Mr. Callison was an active church worker, and he will be greatly missed in this community. In his immediate family, he is survived by his wife, one son and three daughters. A complete obituary is given on another page of this paper.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. B. Chancellor, assisted by W. C. Cole of Des Moines, Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Lorimor cemetery.

Sam J. Callison was born in Pocahontas county, West Virginia February 1, 1847, and passed away at his home in Winterset, Iowa, December 8, 1923, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 7 days. While yet a boy he moved to Illinois where he remained until in 67 and then moved to Iowa and located in Monroe Township, Madison County.
He was united in marriage to Julia B. Robinson in 1868, and to this union were born one son and four daughters. One daughter preceded him in death. The children who remain are Mary E. Schoenenberger, Winterset, Iowa, Glenn T. Callison, Grand Junction, Colorado, Mrs. Lola E. Berry, Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Jessie Rowena Walter, New York City. This (sic) mother passed away October 21, 1905.
Mr. Callison was united in marriage to Mrs. Ella Dunbar in 1906, and this companion remains to treasure the memory of the devoted one with whom she walked those seventeen years.
About 16 years ago Mr. Callison moved to Winterset, where he continued to reside to the time of his departure from the earth. In early life this man became a Christian, and was a very useful man in the Christian fields of service, even unto death. He at the time of his death was serving as chairman of the board of elders of the Winterset Church of Christ and was teacher of the Loyal Men’s Bible class.
Besides his wife he leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, one son, three brothers, Judd of Greenfield, Iowa; John C., of Seattle, Washington; Newton C., of Gainesville, Florida; and two sisters, Mrs. Geo. Jameson, Abington, Illinois and Mrs. J. W. Knight, of Red Oak, Iowa. Many more distant relatives and a large circle of old and true friends unite with these close relatives in the spirit of tender sympathy.
Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ in Winterset Monday morning at 11:00 o’clock by E. B. Chancellor assisted by W. C. Cole of Des Moines. Burial was made in the Lorimor cemetery.
