Death of Gladys Mapes

Gladys, the young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mapes, died Saturday night, about 8:30 after an illness of a few days with septic cerebral spinal meningitis. She took a bad cold the first of the week and added to the damage that was done in the car accident on the Tileville road last May, the natural protection between the nostrils and the brain was destroyed, permitting an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord.

The Mapes family formerly made their home in this county but spent thirteen years in Oklahoma, coming back to Madison county several years ago. They are now making their home on West Jefferson street, where the funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock, by Rev. Smith of Des Moines. Burial was made in the Roberts cemetery in Adair county.

The little girl is survived by her father and mother, four sisters, Mrs. Tressa Sherwood, Mrs. Irma Thomas and Lula, of Winterset; Mrs. Bessie Walters of Supply, Okla.; and two brothers, Floyd and Dick, also of Winterset.
