Mary A. Kale was born in Tuscarawas county, Ohio, July 26, 1846 and departed this life Sept. 16, 1923 at her home in Des Moines. She came to Madison county by covered wagon in 1852, and was united in marriage to Isaac N. Landis. To this union were born seven children, five of whom survive her: W. B. Landis and Elsie M. See of Peru, Minnie B. Moorman, J. Landis and T. C. Landis, of Des Moines.

She leaves beside her family to mourn her loss, five sisters and one brother, two sisters and one brother living in Winterset, two sisters living in Kansas and one in Minnesota, also 12 grandchildren. She was converted at the age of 13 at the Elm Grove church and later placed her membership in the University Church of Christ in Des Moines, where it still remains. She has always been a true and loyal Christian, always rejoicing in the faith that, to her, assured a home in Heaven where trials and suffering are no more.

As long as she could speak, she was continually singing hymns and praying to God, longing to go and dwell with Him. A few days before her death, she called her children by name to her bedside, taking them by the hand and saying, “I am going home. I want to go, I am happy. Meet me, meet me, I feel I am almost there.” She passed away peacefully and is now resting in the Great Beyond.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Follanbee at the M. E. church in Peru. The body was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery by the side of her late husband.
