Mayor H. A. Cross Stricken With Apoplexy While on Street
It was hard to believe what we heard Tuesday evening when the word was flashed over this community that Mayor H. A. Cross was dead. He had been apparently in his usual health, seemed as well and attended his business matters up to 6 o'clock Tuesday evening, when he went home. Thinking of another little matter of business, he started back up town and met Mr. and Mrs. S. B Lillard and Mrs. Lee Stewart. Mr. Lillard had just gotten an evening paper and upon meeting Mr. Cross called his attention to the Americans' overseas activities. Just at that moment Mr. Cross was stricken with apoplexy and fell, never regaining consciousness.
Dr. Wallace was immediately summoned and came, but life was extinct before the doctor reached him. It was sudden, but not altogether unexpected, going, as he has spoken of irregularities of his heart action but none had suspected that death was hovering so near.
In his passing, Macksburg loses a highly respected citizen, also her mayor. He was serving his second term as mayor of our town. Along with his official duties, he was also agent for the C.W. & D.M. R.R.
He was firm in his determination and beliefs, and performed his duties along the line of “Justice to all with malice toward none.” It can be truly said “He went about doing good.”
Before retiring from the active ministry and settling down here, he had served as pastor of the Baptist church for several years, also as pastor at a number of other places in the state.
The bereaved family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this sad hour.

One end toward which he bent every effort was to make possible the education of his children.
