Services for Guy “Bud” Hess, 98, rural Murray and formerly of Afton, who died Nov. 16 at the Clarke County Memorial Hospital at Osceola, were held Monday, Nov. 20, at the Watts-Lindsay Golden Rule Funeral Home with the Rev. Marty Burgus officiating. Burial was at the King Cemetery.

Born Oct. 25, 1891 in Mahaska County, Iowa, he was the son of Edward and Jetta Leanhart Hess. He came to Madison County at the age of 13 and had lived most of his life in Madison, Clarke and Union counties. He lived in Murray the last 19 years and worked most of his life as a farmer, but also did carpentry, trained race horses and was employed in a greenhouse. He retired in 1971.

He was married June 2, 1917 to Orrella Cram in Madison County and was affiliated with the Elm Grove Church in Madison County.

Survivors include his wife; a sister, Cleta Oglesbee of Winterset; sons, Guy A. Hess and wife Louella of Osceola, Boyd and wife Phyllis of Twin Peaks, Calif.; George and wife Edith of Council Bluffs; Mack and wife Sharon of Oglivie, Minn. And Lenard and wife Nancy of Omaha; daughters, Freda Schaff of Murray, Georgia Moore and husband Charles of Truro, and Mary Siefkas and husband Leonard of Murray; and Lois Warren of Council Bluffs; 31 grandchildren, 58 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, parents, four sisters, and infant brother and three granddaughters.
