Services for Elizabeth Maxwell, 99, Earlham, who died Aug. 30 at Winterset, were held Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Earlham Friends Church with the Rev. Eldon Cole officiating. Burial was at the Earlham cemetery.

Born Aug. 19, 1890 near Earlham, she was the daughter of Josiah and Louisa Knudson Maxwell. She lived near Earlham until 1904 when the family moved to Oskaloosa. She and her brother Charles attended school in the same class from kindergarten until graduating from Penn College in 1911. She later received her master of arts degree from the University of Iowa and a Ph. D. degree from New York University.

She taught high school, was a dean of women at Iowa State Teachers College, managed a placement agency, did welfare work and raised Angora rabbits. At age 65 she returned to teaching. She was active in the Earlham Friends Church, CARE program and the Earlham and Winterset museums.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. Survivors include two nieces and a nephew and a foster daughter, Pattie Koop of Danbury, Conn.
