Page 5The remains of Mrs. Mary E. Burns were brought from near Orient Sunday and laid to rest in the Beardsley cemetery in Scott township, where the husband and two daughters are buried.
Mary Haggard was born near Carthage, Ill., Feb. 11, 1836 and died at the home of her son, J. E. Burns, near Orient, Oct. 16, aged 77 years, 8 months and 5 days. She was united in marriage to John Burns April 6, 1856 near Carthage, Ill. Six children were born to this union, three sons remaining to mourn her death, Wm. O. and Frank M., of Clifton, Colo., and J. E., near Orient.
She united with the Baptist church in Illinois in early life and throughout her entire life she was a true Christian. On moving to the Orient neighborhood she united with the Hill of Zion Christian church.
Funeral service was held at the home conducted by her pastor, Rev. S. M. Milholland, Sunday at 8 a.m. and at 3 p.m. at the New Hope church, conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis, assisted by her pastor.
It was in the Ord neighborhood that the years of her active life were spent. Here her children were born and reared to maturity with the exception of one son, who died in infancy, and two, Myra and Minnie, died after their marriage.
