Nancy Catherine Black was born in Fincastle, Ind., Dec. 18, 1843, and died suddenly at her home southeast of St. Charles, Feb. 23, 1913, aged 69 years, 2 months and 5 days.

When about eight years of age she moved, with her parents to a farm where the town of Hanley now stands, where she lived until she was married to Harrison Shutt on July 23, 1865. To this union seven children were born. She leaves her husband, seven children: Mrs. Ella Romine of New Virginia, Mrs. Anna Picken, Henry Shutt, Mrs. Ollie Van Rossum and Will Shutt of near St. Charles; Mrs. Lizzie McGinnis of Des Moines and John, who is still at home, but is attending school in Des Moines; twenty three grandchildren, one great grandchild and one sister, who lived in Indiana, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother and neighbor. She united with the Brethren church about 35 years ago, and remained a faithful member until death called her. She has been in failing health for several years, but was able to be around until the last. The friends mourn not as those who have no hope.

Funeral services were held in the M. E. church on Tuesday Feb. 25th at one p.m., conducted by Rev. W. W. Williams. The pallbearers were Wm. Riley, Alex Black, Austin Shigley, George Shutt and Grover Carpenter, all being nephews of the deceased. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery. The sympathy of the community is extended to the family in their bereavement.
