Winterset Madisonian – October 9, 1912
Pg 3Annie Elizabeth Carroll was born in Macomb, McDonna county, Illinois, April 10, 1858 and died Sept. 27, 1912, aged 54 years, 5 months and 17 days.
On Nov. 26, 1879, she was united in marriage to G. A. Foster. To this union were born four children, two having died in infancy. The other two, John Carroll and Elizabeth Mae, survive her and they with their father were at her bedside when the spirit left the body to be with Jesus.
About three months ago she was taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, where an unsuccessful operation was performed. After she was brought back from the hospital she was too weak to return to her home in Monroe township of this county, hence she was brought to the home of her sister, Mrs. W. H. McGinniss, where she was cared for by a host of friends and neighbors, until the hour of her departure.
At the age of twelve years, she heard the voice of Jesus, and gave her heart to Him and united with the Presbyterian church. About twelve years ago, she with her husband united with the Christian church and remained a member of this church until she was called home. For some time before her death, she had a desire to depart and be with her Lord in the “house of many mansions”. She was not impatient, but with joy awaited the time when her spirit, would be set free from the body of suffering. She talked freely of the change that she knew was coming soon and told the loved ones, that stood at her bedside, and watched with loving care that she wanted them to meet her in heaven. God’s word became a special delight to her as she neared the river, and she frequently called for the reading of the twenty third psalm and for prayer. She loved the music of song, and often called for the songs of Zion. As she had great comfort in hearing the twenty third psalm road, so she had special delight in having friends sing “I can hear my savior calling”. This special desire that she had for this song, may suggest the reason for her desire to have Jesus come to take her home. Just before going, she said to her sister, “Oh, I am so happy”. Truly, the Savior was as she passed through the valley of the shadow of death.
She leaves to mourn their loss, a husband, a son and a daughter, four brothers and two sisters, and a great company of other relatives and friends. Their loss is her eternal gain. Rev. Holfenstein of Des Moines was called to conduct the funeral and Rev. Grafton of the Christian church, was called for prayer. Mrs. Foster was laid to rest in the Rock City cemetery of Winterset.
