LARRY GENE McDONALD, Earlham

Larry Gene McDonald, 67, passed away Friday, September 10, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Per Larry's wishes, his cremated remains will rest in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 18, at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Adel.

Larry was born January, 11, 1943 in Hermosa Beach, California. He graduated in 1961 from Arvada High School in Arvada, Colorado and served 21 years in the U.S. Navy prior to working for NCR and OCE servicing high speed laser printers. He received multiple awards throughout his military and private sector careers for exceptional performance and outstanding leadership.

Larry was a devoted family man with a sharp sense of humor and an incredible work ethic. He enjoyed playing golf, fixing things and rooting for the Cubs and the Broncos.

Larry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara, of Earlham; daughter, Michelle Parkison of Earlham; daughter, Jeannine Pacholski of Earlham; son, Jim McDonald (Staci Chrystal) of Grimes; son, Mike McDonald of Des Moines; brother, Jerry (Suzy) McDonald of Valdez, Alaska; mother, Virginia (Schultz) McDonald of Earlham; eight grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald W. McDonald.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Adel. Memorial contributions may be made to the family for a memorial to be directed later.

Larry Gene McDonald, 67, passed away Friday, September 10th, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Per Larry’s wishes, his cremated remains will rest in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, September 18th, at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Adel.

Larry was born January 11th, 1943 in Hermosa Beach, California. He was raised in rural Nebraska and graduated in 1961 from Arvada High School in Arvada, Colorado. Larry served 21 years in the U.S. Navy. Throughout his naval career, he served on a submarine, several ships, as a Company Commander to new recruits, as an Investigator in the NCIS Narcotics Division and taught electronic A, B and C schools. After retiring from the Navy in 1982, he went on to work for NCR and OCE, where he maintained and repaired high speed laser printers. He received multiple awards throughout his military and private sector careers for exceptional performance and outstanding leadership.

He married Barbara Jean (Fleury) in Elgin, Illinois, on February 26, 1966. Larry was a devoted family man with a sharp sense of humor and an incredible work ethic. He enjoyed cooking on the grill, playing golf, fixing things and rooting for his favorite sports teams: the Chicago Cubs and the Denver Broncos.

Larry is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara of Earlham; daughter Michelle Parkison of Earlham, daughter Jeannine Pacholski (James Osberg) of Earlham, son Jim McDonald (Staci Chrystal) of Grimes, son Mike McDonald of Des Moines, brother Jerry (Suzy) McDonald of Valdez, Alaska, mother Virginia (Schultz) McDonald of Earlham, eight grandchildren—Nathan (Stephanie) Parkison, Sarah Parkison, Tawinee Bunnell, Ryan Parry, Ashley McDonald, Jacob Pacholski, Natalie Osberg, Olivia McDonald—and two great grandchildren, Braydon and Christian Parkison. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald McDonald.
