J. R. Shannon

The news of the death of J. R. Shannon at 4:30, Saturday afternoon, was heard with deepest sorrow by a multitude of his friends, for though he has suffered long, few knew that he was in a critical condition, yet all were glad the end came so quietly and without longer extended suffering.

Mr. Shannon had been a resident of this city since the close of the war and in later years as janitor of the south ward school house and of the court house, he increased his friends many told and all who knew him enjoyed his genial way and happy greetings. Nine years ago he became custodian of the rooms of the attorney at the state capitol and at the funeral the beautiful floral decorations and the presence of friends from each room attested the place be held in friendship.

The funeral services were held Monday at two o’clock from the residence, Rev. L. S. Corkey in charge. A large number of friends, including the G.A.R. members were in attendance.
