The funeral of Johnnie Mardis, which was held from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. H. Mardis on last Friday afternoon was largely attended. Those from a distance were Pearl Mardis of Corydon, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Merrill, Frank Keist, J. B. McDonald, Wm. Ayres, Frank Bennett, Matt Kapp, D. Reilly and Mr. Tusant of Des Moines; R. E. Radcliffe, Ray Barnum, Mrs. F. M. Hall, and Miss Zella Brewer of Omaha.

John Ratliff Mardis was born January 12, 1890 at Des Moines, Iowa.

The first fifteen years of his life were spent in that city. In 1905, he moved to Omaha, attended the public schools of that place and graduated with honors. He later attended the Iowa State College at Ames and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. Upon completing his work in college, he was associated with his father in the contracting business at Des Moines and at Omaha.

He died in Des Moines on April 11th, following an operation. Burial was in Winterset on Friday afternoon, the funeral services being held from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Huldah Mardis, conducted by Rev. J. S. Corkey of the Presbyterian church. He is mourned by father, mother, one brother, Homer, and one sister, Mary, besides other loving relatives and friends. To know John was to love him. He was of a sympathetic and affectionate disposition—a young man of sterling character.

Obituary – John Mardis Jr.

John Mardis Jr. son of the well known Des Moines and Omaha Contractor, died in a hospital in Des Moines last week. The funeral occurred in Winterset from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Thomas Mardis Friday afternoon at four o’clock.

Mardis was very well known in Winterset where he was a frequent visitor with his grandparents, George Ratliff and Mrs. Mardis, and with his uncle, Fred Mardis.

He was strong and vigorous. He went to a hospital to have his tonsils removed and was recovering from the operation when a small abcess appeared in his side. The surgeons removed it. Blood poison set in and he died in a few days.

He was a graduate of the Omaha public schools and was a year or two at Ames. He was taken into partnership last year with his father, who is one of the state’s largest contractors and had charge of the Omaha work. He was a young man of fine executive ability and handled large forces of men.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev, Corkey. Besides Mr. and Mrs. Mardis the following friends from abroad were present at the funeral: Pearl Mardis, Corydon, Frank Keefe, Des Moines, J. B. McDonald, Des Moines, Frank Bonnett, Des Moines, Matt Kane, Des Moines, Mr. Toasant, Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Merrill, des Moines, R. E. Ratliff, Omaha, Ray Barnum, Omaha, Mrs. E. M. Hall, Omaha, Mrs. Zita Brower, Omaha.
