Mary A. Mannon was born in the state of Maryland, April 12, 1836 and died September 30, 1911, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 18 days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. J. Spurgin in Clark county, Iowa. She was left an orphan at an early age and was taken to be raised by a family named King. She moved to Illinois with her foster parents in 1852.

At the age of 17 she united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Whitefield, Illinois, and has always lived a life of love and trust in her Savior.

She was united in marriage to John B. Cox, Feb. 10, 1859, and to this union were born five children: Joseph H. Cox of Atwood, Kansas; Mrs. Martha Burd, Murray, Iowa; Mrs. Mary F. Spurgin, Murray, Iowa; Mrs. Emma Reager of Noreatur, Kansas; and John A. Cox of Winterset, Iowa. She moved with her family to Madison county, Iowa, in 1883, and since that time has resided in Madison and Clark counties. She has been a devoted wife, a kind and loving mother and grandmother, and a kind friend to all whom she met in life’s pathway.

She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, all the children and thirteen grandchildren.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in East Peru, on Wednesday, Rev. J. W. Brewer, pastor of the church officiating. A large concourse of people witnessed the last sad rites and followed the body to its last resting place in Peru cemetery.
