William A. Simmons was born in Herkimer county, N. Y., July 2, 1830, and died at Truro, Iowa, August 12, 1911, at the age of 81 years and 21 days. He emigrated to the state of Iowa when he was 24 years of age, that state then being opened for settlement.

In the spring of 1855, he purchased a farm in Clayton county, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Miss Malinda Chatman Nov. 15, 1864. To this union were born two children, Mrs. R. G. Butters of Manchester and W. G. Simmons of Murray. He remained on the farm in Clayton county until the spring of 1881, when he sold this farm and moved to Dubuque county and engaged in the creamery and mercantile business. In February of 1890, he sold his interest in Dubuque county and purchased a farm in Clark county, where he lived until 1905, when he sold his farm and moved to Truro, in Madison county, where he resided until his death.

He was a strong believer in Christ, and became a member of the M. E. church in Truro, soon after he came here to live. He was made a Mason a good many years ago and was a member of Ivy lodge, No. 483 of Truro, at the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, a son, a daughter, four grandchildren, two sisters and a large circle of friends.

The funeral services were held in the Truro M. E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. K. Corkill and the member of Ivy lodge on Tuesday, August 15th, after which, he was laid to rest in Union Chapel cemetery.
