JOSEPHINE SAWYERS

Josephine M. Bunce, daughter of Hiland and Mary Bunce, was born in Madison county, Iowa, Jan 8, 1866, and died at her home in Grand River township, July 31. 1914. In infancy she moved with her parents to a farm in Grand River township, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to George Sawyers, Juy 1, 1888. They resided on different farms in Madison county until the death of her stepfather in 1895, then they moved to the old homestead, with her mother, afterward buying the farm. Three children were born to this union; one son who died in infancy, and two daughters, Ruby and Helen.

Sister Sawyers was an earnest, faithful christian worker. For some time she was the successful superintendent of the Middle River M. E. Sunday school, but failing health compelled her to give up this work. She loved to read the Word of God and meditate upon it, for it was food for her soul. In her Bible, in her own handwriting, we find the following date and quotations: “Josephine M. Sawyers was converted Nov. 11, 1893 in Wilson Chapel, M. E. church, Adair county, Iowa. Reclaimed, fully justified by faith, Oct. 14, 1904, Sanctified wholly, Oct. 23, 1904, at Middle River River M. E. church. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Thy grace is sufficient for three.”

She leaves to mourn her departure, a kind and devoted husband, two loving daughters, four sisters, one brother and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held Sunday at the home, Rev. Clearwater and Rev. Pruitt conducting the services. The body was laid to rest in the Roberts cemetery.
