GEORGE W. SEEVERS

George W. Seevers was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, March 19, 1841. The parents, Alfred and Maria Seevers, emigrated to Iowa when he was three months old and settled in Mahaska county, near Oskaloosa. He received his education and began studying law, but discontinued this study, and for a number of years, took merchandise across the plains, traveling with ox teams, and landing the produce in Denver. He also worked in the gold mines of Colorado, and other western states.

In the spring of 1864, the family moved to Madison county, and Mr. Seevers came from the west a few months later and engaged in the nursery business with his father.

He was married in 1867 in Winterset, Iowa, to Miss Emily Ann Pursel, who died in 1910. Three children were born to this union, two dying in infancy and Jezelle Seevers, who survived the father.

After marriage, he again took up the study of law with V. Wainwright, now deceased; was admitted to the bar in 1874 and for many years continued the practice of law.

He never united with any religious denomination, but was a firm believer in the doctrine of Universalism. He was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen of Winterset and active in the work.

On Sunday evening, Aug. 2d, he complained of being ill. The members of his family thought it was not serious, but on Monday, he suffered a stroke of apoplexy, which paralyzed the body so that he was conscious only a short time, and death relieved his suffering on Friday Aug. 7th at the ripe age of 73 years, 4 months, 18 days.

Two sisters Mrs. Belle Garlinger of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and Mrs. Ella Newlon of Butler, Mo., who was present at the funeral, and one brother, Burns, of Plattsburg, Mo., survive the brother.

He had an extensive acquaintance with people of Madison and Mahaska counties, and was making preparations to visit his boyhood home when he became ill. His disposition was happy and contented, he will be greatly missed by his many friends.
