CARMELITA BLACKMAN, Des Moines

Carmelita Blackman died peacefully on August 10, 2010 at Wesley Acres Health Center surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at St. Augustin Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior to the service time burial will follow in the Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Carmelita Joan Meade was born January 20, 1919 to Joseph and Ella Meade in Cumming, Iowa. She graduated from St. Clara Academy, Sinsinawa, Wisconsin and earned her teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Carmelita taught in the Oxford Iowa School District for three years.

Carmelita and Don K. Blackman were married on June 8, 1944. Don and Carm moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where they raised their four children. Carm returned to college in 1967 and received a four year undergraduate degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities and Behavioral Disorders from Drake University. Carm taught in the Des Moines Public Schools as a Learning Disabilities Specialist.

A life-long learner, Carmelita delighted in her many interests including the arts, literature, antiques, bridge and travel. She is preceded in death by her husband, Don, her parents, sister Paula Boucher and brother Joseph Meade. Carmelita is survived by her sister Helena Bell and brothers, John Meade and Fr. Denis Meade O.S.B.; her four children, Don Jr., David, Thomas Blackman and Mary Ann Wallace; their spouses, and eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Augustin Parish, Des Moines, Iowa and to the Anawim Foundation, Des Moines, Iowa.

Note: The Meade family owned land in Sections 14 and 15 of Lee Township, Madison County near Cumming where Carmelita was born as verified by her Madison County Birth Record. Carmelita Blackman was the owner of land at the time of her death in Section 15 of Lee Township, Madison County, Iowa.
