Page 1FATAL GUN ACCIDENT
Mrs. K. E. Carter Instantly Killed by Shotgun in the Hands of 7 Year Old Grandson
One of the most heartrending gun accidents of many years occurred at the home of H. R. James of Union township on Monday morning, when Mr. James’ seven year old boy accidentally shot and killed his grandmother, Mrs. K. E. Carter. Mrs. Carter, Mr. James’ mother, lived with another son, John James of this place. On Sunday, they drove to Harry James’ farm, formerly owned by Geo. Cox and situated ten miles northeast of Winterset. Mrs. Carter remained intending to spend the week. On Monday morning she and her daughter-in-law were cleaning and overhauling of the bed rooms. A breech loading shot gun stood in the corner and behind a dresser. The women moved the dresser from the wall and this left the gun within reach of the little boy, who without being noticed, picked up the gun and snapped the hammer. The charge struck Mrs. Carter in the left shoulder and penetrated the heart. She died almost instantly. Mrs. James, the daughter-in-law, narrowly escaped a like fate, the charge burning the hair as it passed her head.
Mrs. Carter was 64 years old, and is survived by three sons, Harry and John of this county, and Maurice of Mt. Pleasant. The funeral was held from the residence of Harry James on yesterday forenoon and burial in Winterset.

Elizabeth Shupe was born Oct. 10, 1849, and died June 19, 1911, aged 62 years 8 months and 9 days. She was born in Westmoreland county, Penn., but when nine months old came with her parents to Madison county, Iowa, and made her home in that county since that time.
In 1866 she was united in marriage to Nathan James who passed away in 1871. To this union were born two children, John and Harry James, who still live in Madison county. In 1879 she was again married to James D. Carter who passed away in 1889. One child was born to this union, Maurice A. Carter of Mt. Pleasant. Besides the three children, the deceased leaves to sisters, Mrs. John Luckhart, of Ogden, Utah, and Mrs. Emma Atkinson of Larrime, Ill.
At an early age, she was converted to the Methodist Protestant church and then became an earnest worker in the United Brethren church, and has always been a faithful Christian. Mrs. Carter was a faithful daughter, caring for her mother through long weeks of illness, a kind and loving wife and a loving mother. She has a host of neighbors and friends who can say of her, “to know her was to love her.”
All the children were present at the funeral, also a niece, Blanche Pullen of Davenport. The funeral took place at the home of her son, Harry James, in Union township at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis, and interment was made in the Rock City Cemetery.
