Phyllis Irene Werts was born the daughter of Harry and Marcia (Cook) Frey on June 24, 1919, at the family farm in Madison County, Iowa. She died on June 8, 2010, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset at the age of 90 years, 11 months and 15 days.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 12, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with Pastors Jim Howland and Donna Vaughan officiating. Burial was at Earlham Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Earlham and Redfield.
Phyllis graduated from Earlham High School in 1937 and went on to marry Loyal Werts on Nov. 6, 1937, in Missouri. This union was blessed with six children: Lucile, Dorothy, Dick, Harry, Jim and Carolyn. Phyllis was a lifelong housewife and resident of Madison County, Iowa. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset and a member of the Presbyterian Women.
She also was a member of the Douglas Township election board for many years. Phyllis was very active with the Farm Bureau Women of Madison County. She and Loyal belonged to “Pitch” and “Somer-Set” card clubs. They enjoyed camping with the Forester Club, and travelling to Arizona near Apache Junction for the winters. Phyllis was very involved with the operation of the farm, working side by side with Loyal. She also had a huge garden and canned much of her bounty for her family. She also raised chickens for the freezer and sold eggs. She had a very large strawberry patch and kept many blooming flowers around the home. She loved to sew and made all her clothes as a young woman and sewed for her family and grandchildren. Phyllis kept a diary most of her life and this item was called upon numerous times to settle an argument. Phyllis was especially known for her homemade fried chicken and her beef and homemade noodles. She enjoyed cooking for her family, and family get-togethers were her favorite time — especially birthdays and holidays — so she could spend time with her grandchildren.Phyllis is survived by daughter Lucile Wycoff of Winterset; daughter Dorothy Smith and husband Bill of Grinnell; son Dick and wife Kay of Earlham; son Harry and wife Judy of Des Moines; daughter Carolyn Hibbs and husband Mike of Vinton; sister Carolyn Anker of Earlham; sister-in-law Louise Frey of Earlham; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loyal; her son, Jim Werts; and a brother, Harold Frey.
