A Sad Fatality -

Lawson Miller of Douglas Township is instantly killed by a falling tree.

Last Tuesday, Lawson Miller, who lives in Douglas township, about one and a half miles east of Robert Stewart's was at the latters place along with Earl and Albert Armstrong helping the Stewart boys repair a building. In the evening, after supper these persons went about sixty rods west of the Stewart's residence into the Early timber to cut a big tree. The tree which was a large willow had been known to be the home of a large swarm of bees and was somewhat decayed. This tree in being cut off lodged against an ash tree which Al Steward and Mr. Miller proceeded to cut. The former cut it half off and Mr. Miller then took the ax to cut the other side. When the tree began to fall, both Stewart and Miller stepped back; instead of falling directly from them as they supposed, it fell obliquely toward them in the direction the two men had taken.

Mr. Miller was only a few steps behind Stewart when the tree fell; some of the branches; some of the branches brushed against the latter and the former was stricken to the ground. It, being dark, it could not be determined how seriously the injured man was hurt, he was immediately carried to the Stewart residence and Mrs. Miller and Dr. Day of Earlham phoned for. Dr. Day came as quickly as an automobile could carry him from Earlham and on examination it was found that one side of Mr. Miller's skull was badly fractured and that death probably resulted incautiously.

It is impossible to realize the anguish of Mrs. Miller, who arrived at the Stewart house to find her husband dead. Besides the widow, there are four children in the family, two sons and two daughters; also, an aged father about 90 years old and a mother who lives nearby.

This sad accident has cast a great gloom over the people of Douglas and Jackson townships where as many of the friends and relatives of the deceased reside.

A Fatal Accident

A sad accident occurred Tuesday evening in Douglas township when Lawson B. Miller, one of the prominent farmers of that township met with instant death by the falling of a tree.

Mr. Miller, who lived in the northwest corner of Douglas township went over to Robt. Stewart’s, a neighbor, Tuesday afternoon to help with some work. After supper it was proposed to cut down a “bee tree” in the woods near by. There were five or six men in the party and the tree was felled and in its descent one large limb struck Mr. Miller on the head, crushing the top of his head, and it is thought, killing him instantly, as he did not speak after being struck. A doctor was brought but of course could do nothing and his remains were taken to his home.

The funeral services will occur tomorrow. The occurrence has cast a gloom over the whole neighborhood, as Mr. Miller was held in the highest respect and esteem by all who knew him. He leaves a wife and four grown children.
