Found Dead in His Pasture

On Tuesday evening, P. J. Gill, of Lee township, was found dead in his pasture about a mile and a quarter from his home, by Jas. and Joe Tiernan. His neck was broken and he was otherwise badly bruised about the head. Nobody remembers seeing Mr. Gill since Tuesday, May 10th, when he was seen going toward the pasture with a rope. When found there was a mule in the pasture with a rope around its neck and it is presumed that Mr. Gill was either killed or dragged to death by the mule.

On Tuesday evening of this week, Charley Crawford was in that neighborhood on business and on stopping at Mr. Gill’s could not find anybody at the house, and on going to the barn found his team still harnessed and nearly starved to death, and it is supposed that they had been there a week without food or drink. Mr. Crawford notified the neighbors and a search began for Gill. The body was found as above stated. Coroner Richards and Sheriff Breeding were called to the scene, and after a thorough investigation, come to the conclusion that his death was caused by the mule and decided to hold no inquest.

The remains were taken to the home of his brother John from which place the funeral will occur today. Mr. Gill was a bachelor about fifty years of age and lived alone.
