Permelia Smith was born in Jackson County, Indiana, April 27, 1837, died March 24, 1910, aged 72 years 10 months and 27 days. She came with her father’s family to Iowa and settled in Madison County August 14, 1848. She was married to John H. James in the fall of 1858. He preceeded her to the better world September 3, 1879.

To them were born eight children one having died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. F. E. Bosley died September 14, 1905. Six still remain to mourn the loss of mother. They are Mrs. J. M. Kellogg, of Scott township, Granvil, of Laurel, Mont., Louis, of Murtaugh, Idaho, Albert of Sterling, Colo., Annon and Alonzo of Winterset, who were living with her at the time of her death. Also two brothers Elijah Smith, of Audubon County, and Asa B. Smith, of Madison County.

In March 1883 she was married to John H. Kerns, he died in Council Bluffs, Ia., January 20, 1889. At an early age she united with the Christian Church. In 1880 she place her letter with the U.B. Church, but of late years she has attended the Primitive Baptist meeting when opportunity afforded.

The funeral was held Friday from the Baptist church north of town conducted by S. J. Callison.

Death of Permelia Kerns

Mrs. Permelia Kerns died at her home in the southwest part of town, about midnight lat night after an illness of about a week's duration. She was a woman of advanced years, and is survived by five sons and one daughter. They are Lew and Bogus James of Idaho, Bert James of Colorado, Annon and Lon James of Winterset and Mrs. Ellen Kellogg of Scott township.
