Union Township

Edward Monaghan, an old resident of this township, after a long illness died Sunday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Melroy. The funeral was held from the church Wednesday and interment was made in St. Patrick’s cemetery.

Death of Edward Monaghan

Edward Monaghan, one of the pioneer farmers of Madison county, died at his home in Union township, on Monday the 21st after a long illness. Mr. Monaghan was one of the best known of the many successful farmers of Union township. He settled there in an early day, and by hard work and strict economy accumulated so much of this world’s goods. He was always known to be a man of his word and thoroughly reliable in business matters. He was born in Ireland in 1837 and came to this country while a young man.

He is survived by four sons, Edward, James, John and Thomas. Also three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Nolan, Mrs. Frank Melroy, and Mrs. P. J. Cunningham. The funeral services were held the following Wednesday at the St. Patrick’s church and were conducted by the Father Tory, of Winterset.

Edward Monaghan Dies

Edward Monaghan died early Monday morning at his home in Union township, after a long illness. Mr. Monaghan was one of the pioneers of Madison county and was a resident of Winterset during war times.

He was born in Ireland on the 12th day of April, 1837, and came to this country without means. By hard work and careful attention to business he accumulated a fortune in Madison county land. He was a good citizen and left a host of friends.

He is survived by four sons, Ed, James, John and Thomas and three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Nolan, Mrs. Frank Melroy and Mrs. P. J. Cunningham.

The funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Patrick’s church conducted by Father Troy of Winterset.

Ed Monaghan Dead

Ed Monaghan, one of the pioneer residents of this county, died Sunday evening at his home in Union township. He has not been in good health for several years, suffering from rheumatism and a complication of ailments. He was seventy-two years of age.

Mr. Monaghan came to Madison county in 1863. He was well known as a man of sterling integrity, and his friends were numbered by his acquaintances.

His wife died 21 years ago. He leaves to mourn his loss seven children, three girls and four boys, Mrs. P. J. Cunningham and Mrs. Melroy, of Winterset; Mrs. Joseph Nolan, of Lane, Kansas; John, Thomas, and James Monaghan, of Winterset, and Ed Monaghan, of Idaho. All the children were present at the funeral.

The funeral services were held from St. Patrick’s church, Lee township, Wednesday and burial was in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
