Jerald Nelson Read, 77, of Pasadena, Texas, died May 8, 2010, at Afton Oaks in Houston, Texas.
A graveside service will be held beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14, at Union Chapel Cemetery (South Township, Madison County) with military honors presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset. Visitation will be from 1–8 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset, where the family will be present to receive friends from 6–8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Evening Star Masonic Lodge 43, V.F.W., or the American Legion, all of Winterset.
Jerald Read was born June 5, 1932, in Winterset to Nelson and Addie (Dale) Read. He grew up in Winterset, graduating from Winterset High School in 1950. Following high school, Jerald enlisted in the United States Air Force and later enlisted in the United States Army. During his enlistment, he worked as a mechanic. Jerald retired from the military with 40 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Christopher and Steve Read.
He is survived by two sons, Little Jerry of Illinois and Mike Read of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Melany Benge of Winterset; four brothers — Don Read of Harrisonville, Mo., Clifford Read of Tipton, Paul Read of Maryville, Mo., and Kenny Read of Des Moines; and seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 13 at Ochiltree Funeral Service, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service with military honors by the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #8142 and American Legion Post #184 will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, May 14 in the Union Chapel Cemetery, South Township, Madison County.

Jerald Nelson Read was born in Winterset, Iowa on June 5, 1932, the son of Nelson and Addie (Dale) Read. He grew up in Winterset and graduated from Winterset High School in 1950. Following high school, Jerald enlisted in the United States Air Force and later enlisted in the United States Army. He made a career out of his military service retiring after 40 years. During his enlistment, Jerald worked as a mechanic.
Jerald was not one to join organizations but he did LOVE to bowl. And when he lived in Wyoming, he also enjoyed hunting.
He is survived by his son, Little Jerry of Illinois; his daughter, Melany (Randy) Benge of Winterset; his son, Mike Read of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren, Tyson Olson, Logan Johnson, Addy Benge, Alicia Read, Celeste Read ,Stevie Read and Summer Read; one great granddaughter, Makayla Nelson; four brothers, Don (Ann) Read of Harrisonville, MO; Clifford (Glynnis) Read of Tipton; Paul (Myrna) Read of Maryville, MO; Kenny (Melissa) Read of Des Moines and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Jerald was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Christopher and Steve Read.
