Death of Mrs. Hale

Mrs. Maria Hale died at her home on Green street last Friday night January 28th at 9:00 o’clock after about a month’s illness from heart disease.

Maria C. Ranney was born in St. Louis Nov. 14th, 1836 and on March 24th, 1859 was married to Chas. W. Hale, who died September 8th, 1892. To this union was born six children, Harriet W., Amelia R., Abbie G., Nathan R., Chas. K. and Jennie M. All are living except Abbie, and of those living all were present at her funeral excepting Chas. K., who lives in California and was unable to be present.

Mr. and Mrs. Hale and family came to Winterset in October 1875, where they have ever since resided. After the death of Mr. Hale and the removal from the city to other fields of activities of the sons; the marriage of Jennie M. to Mr. H. S. Thomson, of Earlham, and that of Amelia R. to Chas. Duncan, of Woodward, Mrs. Hale and her eldest daughter, Hattie have lived alone very contentedly and happy. To her family she was thoroughly devoted and the frequent home comings of the absent ones were most joyous occasions for her.

She was a lady of unusual intelligence, culture and refinement and greatly enjoyed the beautiful in everything.

In early life she connected herself with the Episcopal church of which she was a devoted and faithful member, it can well be said that she lived her life for her children and her church.

Although past seventy-three years of age she was, up to her last illness, interested in all the happenings of the day. She was a great reader and well informed on general subjects. In her social nature she was bright, cheery and entertaining. Hers was a happy disposition and she made everyone happy who came in contact with her.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Thomas Cassidy, Rector of St. Marks church, Des Moines, at 2:30 o’clock Monday afternoon and her remains were laid beside those of her husband in the city cemetery.
