Death of E. P. Lewis
Sudden Taking Away of one of the Prominent Residents of Union Township

E. P. Lewis, who has lived on the old McLaughlin farm a few miles east of the city for the past few years, died very suddenly last Thursday. He had sold his farm a few months ago and bought another one near Earlham. Taking advantage of the good roads he had begun moving his farm implements to the new farm. Along with Mr. Renshaw, a brother-in law, he made the trip on Tuesday, returning late in the evening. On the following morning he complained of head ache but went about his work; he gathered a load of corn from the field and then gathered together another load of farm implements which with some assistance he put on a wagon intending to go to Earlham the next day. He slept very little the following night and on Thursday became violently sick and after suffering the most excruciating pain, he died the following day.

Mr. Lewis was born in Brooklyn, New York, on June 22, 1870. He first removed to Illinois and then to Kearney, Nebraska where he was married to Miss Nellie Bunnell.

Some years ago he opened a furniture and undertaking establishment in Peru, in this county, which he conducted for some time; he operated a farm near St. Charles, after which he bought the farm on the Patterson road east of Winterset. He was a very energetic citizen respected by all his neighbors and his unexpected death has cast a gloom over the entire neighborhood. A wife and three children survive.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. A. A. Walbur, after which the body was taken to Earlham for interment.
