BOY KILLED WHILE DRIVING PONY

Wayne Eyerly Killed, and Companion Injured by Auto Truck.

One of the saddest accidents this paper has had to record occurred last Friday, when Wayne Eyerly, the ten year old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Eyerly of Grand River township, was run over and instantly killed by a truck.

Threshing was in progress on the Ray Eyerly farm, four miles east of Macksburg. Little Wayne, with his cousin, Kenneth aged 12, were hauling water to the men with a Shetland pony and cart. On the highway approaching a bridge near the home, Roy McKibban was driving a truck used in hauling the grain, the boys were just ahead and ahead of the boys was Jos. Crocheck, who was hauling in a wagon. Mr. Crocheck was just on or over the bridge, when he heard someone shout that the brakes were not working. He started to pull off the far side of the bridge approach, and the boys were on the bridge when the truck crashed first into them, and then struck and overturned his wagon.

Little Wayne was killed outright and his cousin, Kenneth, sustained a broken rib and other injuries. Medical assistance was soon on the ground and gave attention to the injured boy.

Funeral services were held on Sunday and burial made at Macksburg.

The very deepest sympathy goes out to the grief-stricken parents.

William Wayne Eyerly

On April 19, 1914 there came to gladden the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Eyerly a baby boy and they called him William Wayne. Being the youngest of a family of six, he naturally was a favorite. His cheerful, sunny disposition also made him a favorite among his classmates, both in school and Sunday school. All of these, with his little cousins, enjoyed his loving companionship. He was always whistling or singing, both at work or play. He loved to go to school and in the four years that he attended the Macksburg school, he never missed a day nor was tardy, and in his own mind thought it impossible to miss. Wayne was born and had lived his life in this vicinity.

On Aug. 22, after the noonday meal had been enjoyed by him, he and his cousin had the pleasure of carrying water for the men threshing for his Uncle Ray. They seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it, when without a moment’s warning, his Heavenly Father called him from this world’s happiness to a more blessed happiness in the Great Beyond. He leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, two sisters and three brothers. They are: Orris C., M. Oreen, Alice M., Rolla S. and Ralph B., all of Macksburg; also two nephews, Melvin Dwayne Wallace and Walter William Eyerly, besides his Grandfather Eyerly, 16 uncles, seven aunts, 65 cousins, and a host of friends and playmates.

Note: Burial was made in the Moon cemetery.
