GEORGE W. CURTIS

George W. Curtis was born at Monticello, Iowa, Dec. 12, 1872 and died on Thursday, Jan. 27, 1914,at his home in Madison county, aged 41 years and 2 months. He was the son of George W. and Catherine Clemer Curtis.

He attended the Monticello schools, from which he graduated in 1889, after which he attended the agricultural college at Ames, two years, and then went to Iowa State Teachers' college, from which he graduated in 1893. He taught in the public schools of Iowa for nine years.

In 1909, he came to Madison county, and engaged in farming. On Dec. 18, 1898, he married Miss Ida Patterson, who died April 21, 1907. On Sept. 21, 1909, he was united in marriage with Miss Edith Eighmey.

When about 15 years old, he was converted and became a member of the United Brethren church. He was always a faithful christian and took his religion with him, wherever he went. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Winterset at the time of his death and was a helpful member of the men's bible class. He was a genial man, a hard worker, not sparing himself in his devotion to home and family. He was respected and beloved by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Esther, Ruth, John and Herbert, two brothers, C. C. Curtis of Monticello and H. N. Curtis of Atlantic and three sisters, Mrs. P. C. Keith of Monticello, Mrs. A. B. Chamberlain of Earlham and Mrs. Bert Starks of Princeton, Kansas, all of whom attended the funeral service, which was conducted by Rev. Dr. Corkey, of the Presbyterian church at the home on Monday afternoon. The burial was at Monticello on Tuesday morning.
