Mr. Nicholas Jacobs, an old resident of this county, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. L. Bowles, near Barney. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Barney church and he was laid to rest in the Barney cemetery.

Obituary

Nicholas Jacobs died near Barney, March 20th, 1909, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie M. Bowles, where he had made his home most of the time since the death of his wife four years ago in December.

He was born in Baden, Germany, in 1826. At the age of eighteen he came to America and after a few years came to Des Moines, where he was married in 1853 to Susana Lint. He was a mason by trade, doing some of the first work in Ft. Des Moines. He was a master mechanic, a hard worker and always led a very active life. In later years he took great pleasure in gardening and fruit raising.

Soon after marriage he and his wife united with the Dunkard church and always held to this faith. To them were born nine children, three died when quite young and the second son, Adam, died about twelve years ago. The children living are: Edward Jacobs, of Caladonia, Ia.; Mrs. Minnie M. Bowles and Lewis Jacobs, of Barney; Mrs. Rosa Bettin, of Dunnell, Minn., and Mrs. Alice Bennett, of Tunersville, Texas. One son and one daughter were present at his death. The others were present at the funeral services except the last named daughter.

The services were held from the Christian church of Barney, conducted by Rev. J. A. Macy, of Des Moines. Mr. Ramsey, of Winterset, was funeral director. He was laid to rest in the Barney cemetery by the side of his wife.
