Friday, April 19, 2002PHOENIX - Verlyn G. Killion, 86, of Columbus died at 12:25 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2002, in the Coronado House Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix after an illness.
He was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Zenia to Harry I. and Elsie (Cox) Killion. He moved with his family to Winterset, Iowa, where he graduated from Winterset High School in 1933. He then attended Fort Scott Junior College for two years.
He served in the Army Air Corps, flying B-29 bombers during World War II.
He later was a commercial pilot and instructor.
He married Rachal R. Knox on May 3, 1937, at Lamar, Mo. They moved to Columbus in 1978. She preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 2001.
He was a retired funeral director in Oswego and Columbus, where he worked at the Murdock Funeral Home for more than 20 years. He retired in April 1998.
Survivors include one daughter, Cheryle Diane Floyd of Prescott, Ariz.; and three grandsons.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Fort Scott National Cemetery No. 1 at Fort Scott. Military services will be conducted by the VFW Post of Fort Scott. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Murdock Funeral Home in Columbus.
